Painting a Whale Tail!!

Painting a Whale Tail!!

Update Feb 2022: Whale Tales 2022 has launched and there are now 80 whale tails all around Auckland. There is an app you can download to explore and find them all. My tail is at the K’Rd end of the pink light path.

For the last month I have relocated my studio to the garage because my latest project was too big to fit into my studio!! I am not sure who has been the most excited about this project - me or Arlo!

I was super excited to get a call to say I had been selected as an artist for Whale Tales 2022, a sculpture trail of whale flukes painted by artists that will be all over Auckland this summer.

When the whale tail arrived we tried to fit it around the back into the studio by there was no way it was going to fit! So we made a home for it in the garage.

I am super thrilled that the sponsor for my tail is Resene Colour. They are also providing all the paint and supplies for every artist participating. I am so in love with the colour palette for this project!

Arlo - my number 1 assistant has been loving seeing the whale tail come to life, checking in on the progess each day.

The weather is changing and it has been much colder painting in the garage than my studio! Forever keeping myself warm with some tea.

Watch the full behind the scenes process video below :)

This design “A Splash of Colour” for Whale Tales 2022 is an abstract interpretation of the bubbles produced by whales when they are communicating and playing in the water, like small children, young and carefree. The bright colours and patterns give an essence of the fun that whales seem to have when breaching, spinning and flicking their flukes. Much like being at a really fun pool party in the enormous pool in Auckland’s backyard.
